Object Name Clipping, Newspaper
Scope & Content The item is a newspaper clipping with the title, " Mrs. M'Kinley's Former Teacher." The article reads, " Thirty years ago Mrs. William McKinley, who was then pretty Ida Saxton, was a student at Brooke Hall, in Media, Pa., a famous school, of which Miss Harriet F. Gault and Miss Maria L. Eastman were the principals. A few months since there was a wrangle for the office of postmaster in Media, and the incident served to bridge over the thirty years. Mrs. McKinley was reminded of her school life and seized the opportnity to show her gratitude to the woman who had once been her preceptress. The incident is particularly interesting in that out of it there has come a knowledge of both Mrs. McKinley's girlish characteristics and of her womanly kindness of heart to-day. Brooke Hall died out of existence long ago. Its former principal saw her money melt away and yet could find no occupation for a gentlewoman to engage in. One day not long after President McKinley was inaugurated she learned that there would be a vacancy in the Media Post Office. It occurred to her that the salary of $ 2,200 a year would save her from the penury which she had so good reason to dread. Yet the achievement of such a position..." Below the article there is a picture of Miss Harriet Gault and a picture of Brooke Hall. On the back of the clipping there appears to be an advertisement.
